This version is still proposed as freeware (Copyright Gilbert Grillot &
Sylvain Weiller, Juin 2002) for personnal use.
You must take contact with the programmers (sweiller@free.fr ou
ggrillot@free.fr) for all other uses.
We have tested it on a few (Win9x, Me, XP) and it did perform correctly.
It has been tested with the last virus definitions of NAV.

Introduction
New stuff in V2.0
This software make in a few seconds what you are accustomed to do in a quarter
an hour or more !
It is intended for fast preparation of stereoscopic images on computer screens,
TV or projection with videoprojectors.
Also pairs of images can be saved individually to shoot slides.
For information on how to capture and see 3D images just visit http://sweiller.free.fr or contact your nearest stereoscopic club.
Version 2 is a complete remold of version 1. It stays equivalent for the
principle but the interface is much nicer ! Now, you can work in full screen
mode with autozoom which is very convenient. New windows functions with multiple
options allow you to create/move/visualize and save them at will. Moreover,
you can rotate also non stereo images with a vertical , horizontal line or
by specified angle. There is also an option for fast selecting/editing large
quantities of images without the slower rotation. You can import any old
stereoscopic images and completely rework them (left/right inversion, new
windows ...) as if it was yours !
Starting at V202 a simple astronomical derotator has been added.
Intended for versions 3 and next
...
your suggestions are much welcomed !

Methods
Below is the pair of images we start from...
![]() |
![]() |
impossible to look at them for the following reasons :
1) vertical difference is too important
2) there is a rotation of about 3.5° between the two images...
Happily Stéréo*|*3D is here to help you !
Part of the image obtained when opening the program in not-fullscreen mode*
* In fuul screen mode, the rectangle lined with red is absent as below :
In this mode (which is best as soon as you become familiar with the commands)
we can find from left to right icons corresponding to various actions :
Open/see guessed left and right images from the to do stereo couple (or simple
image to rotate in option)
Open any stereo image (allready saved, scans ...)
Reload image loosing all supposed false manipulations
Throw current screen image in memory to basket
Close all images with saving possibility
Let's open Poutre-G.jpg in help directory
Clic on
to
open left image
An explorer window open to let you choose the left image
(of course you will be able to invert left right images at will later)
Default file extension is JPG, but BMPs can be loaded too
(At this time the tools bar shows new icons which are described below...
Explications of the geometric tool bar :
From left to right ...
function in use // Zoom value // Mouse position (x,y) // Decimal value
of the pixel color planes
horizontal & vertical distance in pixels from the previously clicked
point // straight distance in pixel // Angle of line drown
ZOOM
The image appears in autozoom
,
you can choose size 1 with
, less
or
more
With the zoom you can be very precise in your drawings.
To be able to make a nice stereo image,
we ask you to draw a line (for rotations) and a point (for translations)
Step 1 : Rotating the images
See how the images are not standing right ...
It is really rare to get such a bad result in reality... here it is done
on purpose for demonstration !
... usaually the angle error is in the order of .5° to 1°
!
To straigthen this image couple it is a good idea to use an horizontal (or
vertical, eg with table feet) direction as materialised by a scale bar.
!! Attention for best results (at least until next
version) the line of rotation must be choosen in a unique depth plane : facing
the photographer.
The wooden main bar at the ceiling is a bad choice. If nothing else usable
in your picture, choose the translation point on it !!
Note that by default we are already in rotation mode as symbilised with a
down
Clic with left button on a remarquable choosen point of the image.
This will be the start of the rotation line ... marqued by squares.
Move the mouse keeping button down to the end point and release mouse button
... new squares !
In case, you can clic any other end point, still keeping the start of the
line.
(if you make a mistake, erase the drawing with a right clic)
Note : if you draw an horizontal line (water, horizon...) the icon to use
next will be
with a verticale line choice it would be
in all other cases with any two corresponding points
would be used.
Note : it is possible to invert the colors of the targets with a clic
on
Step 2 : Leveling of images
Clic on
to access leveling function
Now, clic on a choosen point of the left image
(better if in the background ... btw not the case below but it can also be
on the main subject)
instantantly you see on it a round target
(In case of mistake, clic elsewhere)
When done, lock all the references drawn with
to protect your job !
and Step 2 bis, do exactly
the same operations (starting with
) for the right
image.
It is easy to switch between pictures at any time with
or
for
comparaison
Open Poutre-D.jpg
and trace an horizontal line and a point on equivalent features
Step 3 : Automatic Rotations and Translations
Depending of choosen lines before, you can use the following :
"Align to horizontal"
(choosen here) or to "Vertical"
is a special mode with "Symetrical " half angle rotations with lines from
any point to any point
but better in same depth plane !
If you select the left icon, only the left image will rotate
If you select the right icon, only the left image will rotate
(as those rotation are very seldom used, icon are not mirrored in full screen
mode)
With original pictures of 1600*1200, rotations & translations take less
than 10 s with a Pentium4, 2Ghz
(but as said previously, future versions may have a fast rotation mode)
Step 4: Show Stereo
A new icon just appeared on the tool bar :
Clic on it to post the raw stereo image (so called as windows are not set) ...
but
looking
This is far from perfect but already correct for crossed-eye vision.
If not or looking strange, hit F9 key or clic on
to exchange the two images.
Btw, take care not to be hurt by the wooden post !
To have a look full screen if you are not working in this mode, hit F10.
Step 5 : Working on the stereo picture
Of course from here, full screen mode is much more practical !
Explanations on the status bar about separation and files :

couple.

Cursor Functions Available
New tools have taken place on the tool bar.
Placing of the two frames at Dx, Dy distances
from a point choosen to place the position of wanted window depth
Clic left
to
place the point in the left image
Clic right
to
place the point in the right image
Now there is a choice for frames ...
Each time a new size
Clic ,
if the cursor is not a hand then right clic
On left image clic on a starting point then draw a frame
On the right image, frame is drown automatically.
Every time a previously set frame
Enter the values for width a heigth then clic
To measure an existing frame clic
As you draw / adjust the left frame, the right one is automatically drawn in good place !
Other functions
:
modify simultaneously the two frames :
place the mouse on frame lines or corner, clic and keep down and adjust
move both frames simultaneously :
c
move one frame only :
place the mouse on image, shift clic and keep down then move around
(only horizontal moves activated)
symetrical central editing :
clic on then
place the mouse on image, clic and keep down then move
around (only horizontal moves activated)
symetrical external editing :
clic on then
place the mouse on image, clic and keep down then move around (only horizontal
moves activated)
Here is how final result could look like ...
Step 5 : Vision/saving of the final 3D-framed window
clic ,
you should see something like this:
All done, it's time to save !
Clic
to go into 3D-framed images saving mode
Default format is best quality JPEG with JPG extension.
Here you can save and reload at least 5 times before results differences
become discernable.
Of course you can also choose to save in uncompressed BMP
(althought I do not recommend it as the .JPG file needs 5 or more less disk
space !).
Saving is automatic with auto incrementation to allow you to work rapidly.
You may change names now or later at will !
The software detects the previously saved images with 3D- prefix and take
this into account
Depending on menu option settings, saved images (except if you abort some
steps) will be
3D framed vue (3D-nnnn.jpg, etc.),
left (G-nnnn.jpg, etc.) & right (D-nnnn.jpg, etc.) frames,
rotated and translated raw images,
original images (this for name coherence if needed)
The incrementation counter can be set to 1 or any value <10 000 at your convenience
Left and right framesare intended for later work or for shooting slides to
be used with 2 slide projector and polaroid filter
or also to do stereoscopic images visible with anaglyph colored glasses
(Btw, this will ba available soon in the next version).
Other Functions
: Option Menu
From top to bottom :
Echanging views : puts left image
right and right image left (shortcut F9)
This can be used also with imported scanned old stereo
images
Rotation of single images : this option lets you rotate
quickly any images given an horizontal or vertical line
also, any given angle can be applied if you change values of rotation parameters
(shortcut F8)
after validation of menu option "rotation parameter visible" in the
ligne just below
Rotation parameters visible : full manual control on rotation angles and translations

If you activate those two
last options you can
derotate astronomical images
(Version 2.02+ only)
Here are two nice raw images of Saturn taken 20 min apart on an altaz mount (simulation)
if you try to combine them you will get ...
To derotate, load the second image,
select both options,
clic
The parameter windows pops up and you can edit it writing difference in days,
hours, min & sec
as done below whithout leaving empty cases (put zeros if necessary otherwise
message: " is not a correct float)
then clic on "Calculer Rotation Astro (rotation calculation)"
The right value for the rotation is calculated and used automatically
(default reference is for deep sky objects but you can change for other at
will)
now choose clockwise ("Horaire" radio button checked) or anticlockwise (unchecked) according to your optical configuration and clic Ok.
You get the next image
once added to the first one with Registax you have now a much nicer result !

Sequence number validation : same function as the ! signe, beside the auto incremental save number of the status bar
Check for last file number : looks for "3D-nnnn" files in dirs
Reinitialise sequence : next file saved will be 3D-0001.jpg
Next section enables to choose between JPG or BMP savings
Images always centered on screen or not
Full page mode : next time, as ini file is modified, full page mode will be set at opening
Autozoom value : choose between
80% & 100% of your screen size for autozoom mode
Note : 3D vision is help if some black zone around image
Quality / Speed Optimisation
For making a fast selection of the promising pictures in a lot of images
couples choose
"Fast Selection mode"
Then no rotations (actually the slowest operation especially on slower systems)
will be applied
but and only if you define reference points translations will be applied
Note that in this mode left and right frame savings are inactivated.
Images Separation :
In this editing window you can choose the separation in between frames at
will
with this button you can import any stereo image into Stereo*|*3D
and edit them as if they were your own !
Note : You can adjust separation value to match imported image separation
stripe
When clicking here, the current image in thrown away
Last, with
all
images are closed
and you can save them or not when anwsering to the pop up message !
NB.: Any image modification triggers the saving flag. You can refuse to save if you want
