Comparison between defiltered EOS Canon 300D and (only IR cut filter removed) 40D
Filter used in those 2 pictures is Schott RG830 (http://www.optical-filters.com/rg830.html)
Note : RG 950 is unusable with the 40D giving completely dark results but is just great with the 300D)

8000ms exposure, FD8, 400ISO Standard defiltered EOS 40D |
3ms exposure, FD5, 400ISO EOS 300D |
The defiltered EOS 300D is about 2500 time
more sensitive to NIR than the defiltered EOS 40D...
Too bad there is no liveview ... but using a 092 (695nm) filter is fine (see
below).
Here is another defiltered 40D test with only a deep red filter (RG092- 695nm) ...
You can do instant snapshots with this filter
(1/80s, FD8, H(3200) ISO) but you loose most
of the tree foliage brightening effect
(the flowers seen here are naturally white).
Example of defiltered (original IRCut filter
replaced with clear glass to keep AF) Canon 300D pictures
(click on pics for original size) done in normal autofocus and with the ability
to see correctly the scene
in deep red in the viewfinder. Pictures converted to grey tones.
